SH: So where are you from Michelle?
Michelle Skender : I was born and raised in Reno, Nevada and I am now living in Wadsworth, about 30 miles east of Reno.
So how do you like racing the Womens Motocross Nationals?
I love it. I like to travel and see places that I haven't seen before as well as ride on different tracks. I also enjoy meeting new people and making new friends along the way.
Is this your first year racing the nationals?
This is my first year as a WMA Pro, last year I raced the first three rounds of the Nationals as an amateur.
How did the first round go for you at Glen Helen?
Glen Helen went pretty well for my first Pro race, once I got the excitement out after the first moto. I got a dead last start, worked my way up to 22nd place, and then endowed in a corner and failed to get my bike started on the last lap. I placed 29th. Moto 2 was better. I got a better start and worked my way up to 18th place giving me a 24th place finish for the weekend.
Is the competition tougher than you expected it to be?
No tougher than I expected. My goal was to ride as hard and solid as I could and then see where I stood. Now my goal is to keep placing better with each race so I can climb to the top.
So how did the race go for you last weekend at Hangtown?
Hangtown went better than Glen Helen. The first Moto beet me up pretty good. I placed 22nd. The second Moto went better. I relaxed and rode what the track had to give me. I finished 14th winning my first check! Overall I placed 16th out of 33 Women.
What did you think of the course at Hangtown?
I don't know what to think of it. I was so used to riding the track before the changes. It is definitely more technical. It's a challenge but it makes it that much more fun.
What are your plans for the rest of the season?
My plans for the rest of the season are to complete this series and hopefully end up in the top five, as well as train, ride, and race as much as possible.
How long have you been racing?
I have been riding and racing for a little over two years, in November 2005 will be three years.
How do you put together your sponsors?
I put together most of my sponsors through Sponsorhouse.com besides the sponsors I pick up in my area.
How big of a role do your parents play in your racing program?
If it weren't for my parents I wouldn't be racing. My parents don't make it to all of my races. My Mom Shelley Skender (who bought me my first bike) is always pushing me to do good and gives me confidence to accomplish my goals that I set race after race. My Dad Mark Skender always makes sure I have a vehicle to get to the races as well as money, of course, and is always asking me if I won.
What are your goals for the rest of the season?
My goals for the rest of this season are to keep pushing forward and to climb the ladder, race after race, and make it into the top five. Another goal is to compete at the US Open this year in Las Vegas.
Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in the sport of Motocross. Butch Ellis, who takes the place of my parents at the race tracks to make sure I'm all right. He also pushes me, builds my confidence, and always tells me that I can do it. Tom Baugh, my mechanic, and his son Nick Baugh for helping me out at the races and at home. The moto cross familles that are around me at the races who are always there for me no matter what. My trainer Keith at Beyond fitness, and all of my other sponsors: United Auto Sales, A-1 Transport, Onsight Grafix, Works R&D, Michale's Cycle Works, ASV, Carbon Fiber Works, Excel Rims, RK racing chains, Jarrett at Factory Backing, IMS, M2R, No Fear, Renthal, Scott, Factory Connection and Ready Filter. I would also like to thank my competitors for making me faster. My Mom always tells me "Your only as good as your competition."
